Practical digital marketing for
small businesses.

// For Australian small businesses

Know what's working, what's worth fixing, and what to skip — before you spend more on it.

You run the business and do the marketing in the gaps between everything else. I'm a marketing consultant for small businesses: one person you can talk to plainly about your website, your Google visibility, and your ads — starting with an honest look at where things actually stand, not a pitch for more. If you've been thinking about outsourcing your marketing rather than hiring in-house, that's the gap I fill. And if something isn't worth doing, I'll tell you, even when it costs me the work.

// Recognition _ 01

If any of this sounds familiar.

You've probably been sold to before — by an agency, a freelancer, or someone who "does websites" — and you're reading this a little carefully as a result. That's fair. Most small-business owners I talk to have paid for something digital that never quite added up.

You don't need to become a marketing person to make a good call about your website or your ads. You need someone who'll look at what you've already got, tell you plainly what's working and what isn't, and point you at the one or two things actually worth your time and money.

That's where most of my work with small businesses starts — not with a rebuild, a retainer, or a big plan, but with a clear picture of where you stand.

// Common situations _ 02

Situations I get called about.

These are the moments small-business owners tend to get in touch. You might recognise one — or a couple at once.

Thinking about a redesign

The site's a few years old and feeling tired, but you're not sure whether it's really the website holding things back, or the message, or something else. Worth knowing before you spend thousands on a rebuild.

A recent rebuild that hasn't paid off

You spent the money six to eighteen months ago and the enquiries didn't follow. You want an honest read on what's actually broken — without signing up to another retainer to find out.

Paying an agency and unsure what you're getting

The invoice arrives every month and you can't quite tell what it's buying. A second opinion you can hold up against their own reporting.

Word-of-mouth has plateaued

Referrals built the business, but they've levelled off, and you'd like more of the right people finding you directly — without gambling on ads first.

Enquiries come in, but they're the wrong fit

The volume's fine; the quality isn't. Often that's a message-and-clarity problem, not a traffic problem.

Strong locally, hard to find online

You've got years of reputation and repeat customers, but someone searching for what you do wouldn't land on you. The offline trust just isn't reaching the screen yet.

Each of these maps to real work underneath — a website fix, search and tracking, ads, or just a clearer plan — but which one is rarely obvious from the outside. That's what the Health Check is for.

// How it starts _ 03

How the work usually starts.

Before you spend thousands on your digital marketing — SEO, AI search, paid ads, social — get your Digital Health Check. It'll give you a solid base to start from, instead of guessing. Yours to keep, whether you work with me afterwards or not.

It's a free 45-minute call where I walk you through a plain-English read of where things stand: what's working, what's worth fixing first, and what you can safely ignore for now. You leave with a written summary you can act on yourself, hand to whoever you like, or use to decide whether to keep talking.

If there's real work worth doing, the next step depends on what you need:

  • A clearer plan first — a Strategic Digital Roadmap sets out what to do, in what order, and roughly what it costs, before anything gets built.
  • Straight into the work — when the move is obvious (a rebuild, a campaign, getting tracking in place), I build and launch it.
  • Kept running afterwards — ongoing monthly care if you'd rather not have to think about it once it's live.

You can start anywhere and stop anywhere. There's no lock-in, and you deal with me the whole way through. If you'd like to see the full picture first, here's how this works, stage by stage.

// Digital marketing services _ 04

What I can help with.

The Health Check usually points at one or two of five things. These are the digital marketing services I offer small businesses, and I keep to these five so the work stays good:

Web design & development

a clear, fast website people can understand, trust, and contact you through.

More on Web design & development Website maintenance

SEO & analytics

help people find you, and stop making digital decisions from guesswork. (This is the base everything else is measured against — it goes in first.)

More on SEO & analytics Local SEO SEO audit

AI search visibility & GEO

make your business easier for AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI answers to understand and mention properly.

More on AI search visibility & GEO

Google Ads

reach people already searching for what you offer, with tracking in place before money starts going out.

More on Google Ads Google Ads health check

Meta ads

get in front of the right people before they're actively searching for you.

More on Meta ads

You don't need all five. Most small businesses need one or two, done properly. See how each one works →

// Scope _ 05

What this isn't.

So you know what you're getting: I'm one person, start to finish — you'll always know who's doing the work, because it's me doing it. That's the point of it. A few things I deliberately don't do, so the work I do take on stays to a standard worth my name:

If something sits just outside that and there's a real reason to do it, ask anyway — the honest answer might be yes, or it might be a name worth calling instead.

// Fit _ 06

Whether I'm the right fit.

// Likely a good fit if you

Probably not the right fit if you're chasing a guaranteed overnight result, you want WordPress specifically, or there's no website and no budget to start from yet — in which case a Health Check is still a sensible, free first step before spending anything.

// FAQ _ 07

Common questions.

Who can help me market my small business?
There are three usual routes. You can do it yourself with free guides, such as the ones on business.gov.au. You can hire a marketing agency, which suits bigger budgets and businesses that want a team. Or you can work with an independent marketing consultant, which suits small businesses that want one person who does the work and explains it plainly. I'm the third kind: one consultant covering your website, Google visibility and ads, starting with a look at what's already working.
Can I do my own digital marketing?
Often, yes, especially the basics: keeping your Google Business Profile up to date, asking happy customers for reviews, and posting when you've got something worth saying. Where outside help tends to pay off is the parts that are easy to get quietly wrong, like tracking, site speed, search set-up and ad accounts that spend without anyone checking them. A good consultant should tell you which parts you can keep doing yourself.
How much does digital marketing help cost for a small business?
The first step costs nothing: the Basic Digital Health Check is free. The In-Depth version starts at $300. Ongoing monthly help starts from about $1,000 a month, month to month with no lock-in. Website builds and one-off projects are quoted once I know what's actually needed, so you're not paying for work that doesn't matter yet.
Where should a small business start with digital marketing?
Start by finding out what's already working and what isn't, before spending more. That means checking whether your website loads quickly and makes it easy to get in touch, whether your Google Business Profile is complete, and whether you can actually see where enquiries come from. That's what the free Basic Digital Health Check covers, and it gives you a short list of what to fix first.
